Knitathon is a 24 hour fiber fest, from noon to noon November 15th and 16th focusing on all things knitting and crocheting. This is an event for fiber artists of all levels and backgrounds! Participants are invited to join a 24 hour craft circle, enjoy spinning demos, guided hand and wrist stretching breaks, and round the clock hands-on knit and crochet help.
What to expect at Knitathon THIS YEAR:
-Enter the raffle to win a 32 in Homer Floor Loom, complete with all the necessary accessories for you to start your home weaving studio! Registration comes with one raffle ticket to start, with an additional ticket earned each hour spent at Knitathon. More raffle tickets can be purchased for $1/ticket!
-Sign up for our Best Knitted and Best Crocheted Object Competitions, which we will judge at hour 22 of the event (10 am November 16th). Enter one of three skill levels: Beginner, Intermediate, Experienced, or challenge yourself to enter our Best Knitathon Object for pieces that have been made exclusively during Knitathon! Winners will receive knit/crochet themed prizes from our donors!
-Make an item to donate to The Block Gives Back! Throughout the 24 hour event, we will be teaching Knitathon goers to use our knitting machines for making hats and scarves to be donated to the warm clothing drive at The Block Gives Back. Check out www.theblockgivesback.org to find out more about this awesome organization and how they serve our community.
-Participate in our timed contests! Sign up to see if you can untangle yarn the fastest, crochet or knit the most rows in one minute, or be the best blindfolded knitter/crocheter. Winners will receive knit/crochet themed prizes from our donors!
-Be a part of something really special, our large-scale Community Knitting Project, part performance art and part community project. Participants will be guided through a group “arm knitting” project with giant knitted tubes we’ve made on our sock machine!

FAQ
Not sure if you want to attend? Let us answer your questions here!
What is Knitathon?
Knitathon is a 24 hour event at the Tacony LAB Community Art Center taking place in mid November. The purpose is to bring together community around fiber arts.
Does it cost anything?
No! Knitathon is free to attend! You will receive one raffle ticket when you register and arrive, but you may want to enter our raffle by purchasing additional tickets at $1 each to increase your chances of winning some of our valuable prizes. This year’s grand prize is a 32 in 4 harness floor loom!
Do I have to stay the whole 24 hours?
Nope! You can come and go as you please. You can go home for a nap or go out for a break and come back. For every hour you are present, you will get credit for one raffle ticket. If you make something for the competition, we ask that you leave it at the Tacony LAB.
Are we making items to keep or to donate?
This is your choice! You can make something for yourself or something to donate. We will make a donation to the Block Gives Back with any winter accessory items after the event. Last year we were able to give them a large box of hats, scarves and gloves that were made by the community!
Who benefits from the Raffle?
This year we will be donating any funds raised to Therapeutic Craft Care, a non-profit organization dedicated to harnessing the power of creativity to improve the well-being of individuals in our community. “We work with people experiencing disabilities (mental and/or physical) and challenges (social, emotional, etc.). For example, the largest population we work with are those with autism. Additionally we work with patients and faculty in hospitals, even college students.
Supporting our outreach to the Greater Philadelphia area helps us bring the following properties of fiber crafts to our communities that need it the most by:
• Soothing the nervous system
• Building hand/eye coordination
• Developing self confidence
• Even improving neural pathway connections!
Please join us in supporting our goal of community development and outreach based involvement – together we can help uplift our peers through the power of fiber art!” – from Therapeutic Craft Care founder Ellen Rubin.

But I don’t know how to knit! Can I still come?
Yes!! We have circular knitting machines operated by a crank and we can show you how to use one in just a few minutes. The circular knitting machines can make a warm winter hat in less than an hour.
I don’t knit. I crochet. (or quilt, or weave, or spin or other fiber art…)
Can I still come?
Yes! Knitathon is about celebrating community with fiber arts. Bring your crocheting project or your portable loom, drop spindle, needle felting etc!
I might not make it the whole 24 hours. Do I have to be there at the end to win any prizes?
No. You will be asked to fill out your raffle tickets before you leave so we can contact you. If you entered Best Knitted/, our celebrity judge will be there at 10am (hour 22) to judge the entries.
Can I bring children?
Unfortunately this year’s Knitathon event is only for ages 13 and up. We will not have child-friendly hours available. While we would love to invite families back to Knitathon, our space and our staff is not equipped to provide this experience at this time.
